The Lost Sadhanas Project
The Medicine Buddha - Healing Souls

I tried to contact the Medicine Buddha directly but was unsuccessful. I had experienced a few weeks of sickness and I wondered about his healing abilities. I called on my Buddhist guide and asked for an introduction. He took me to a paradise that looked from the outside like a great sea urchin with outer spikes but with inner light. The spikes were the Medicine Buddha's guardians keeping out unwanted influences.

My guide became a crystal vajra and we went past the living spikes to the entrance.

One enters a paradise with praise. The Medicine Buddha is a Buddha of blue light.

So, I thought of a beautiful midnight sky of faceted sapphires, of deep blue silk, and of a shining blue ocean at night. There were deep blue irises and snowballs, underground lakes with blue shadows, and blue copper ore and velvet.

I sensed a great universal nod [indicating acceptance of the offering].

A shining sapphire appeared in the air. It was a window to the vast expanses of the universe. It radiated royal blue light.

The Medicine Buddha said,

I see your desires [for health] and what frustrates them. While part of the sickness stems from this life, the greater problem stems from a deep-seated curse that was created many lifetimes ago.

Can you be healed? Not if we focus on this life.

I create a deep blue river that winds into the past through lives of torture and terror. The blue river of purification goes back and back. There is a root trauma - a poisonous thorn that created a sore in the depths of your soul. It oozes endless hatred.

The deep blue river enters and surrounds it. The thorn is a living parasite that has harmed your soul in life after life. The poison has been accumulating over centuries and has caused suffering and despair in many lives. Its removal creates a volcano of disgust and death.

My river purifies the soul and my blue fire cauterizes the wound. The thorn is a result of an attack by a sorcerer eons ago who attacked you when you were very young. The filth is being washed away. This will percolate down the incarnational line and improve your health in this life. It will help strengthen your soul and make you more resistant to illness. The past life is the primary source of illness, and the recent sickness is secondary. Rest and let your soul recover.

I am the blue of purity, of shining jewels, and vast skies.

My soul is now full of rushing waters.

The Medicine Buddha said,

My medicines are the waters of healing that bathe your soul.

My iconography often shows a vase or jar of nectar. It is not the nectar of immortality, or even of long life. It is the nectar of purification, and the tiny vase is symbolic of deeper waters. I am like Indra, god of the skies and Varuna god of the waters. I send rains of purification that wash away filth, disease, and pain. Then I send the healing waters upon the suffering soul. I cause dead land of the soul to bloom again.

Illness is a form of attack by germs, parasites, enemies, or disasters. Souls should have defenders but often these have been weakened or killed. While outer attacks destroy body's ability to fight, hatred and torture kill the inner defenders. The scars from a physical attack can be seen over a lifetime while hatred and torture destroy the roots of the soul leaving it apparently unharmed. But the soul is left deeply damaged, unable to defend itself because the mistreatment has convinced it that it does not deserve to live.

I am a blue mountain with peaks in the heavens and caverns rooted on the earth. In great underground pools swim the monsters that devour both wisdom and compassion. I wrench from them their victims and send the monsters into the depths of the hell worlds where they live in constant warfare.

You have seen the results of their work - disease and living death.

I pour the waters of healing through your heart taking away the poison that remained. I put you under the waterfall like the Japanese shamans, the Yamabushi, that stand beneath waterfalls to be purified. Time is compressed and expanded. It is as if you have stood beneath the purifying waterfall forever.

My medicine is light infusing the waters of spirit.
